Record labels for Disco music

Republic Records:
An American record company that is a sub section of Universal Music Group. Originally formed in 1995 by Monte Lipman, did at one point represent more feel good music such as reggae and disco but now produced Pop music with artists such as Ariana Grande and The Weekend having produced albums under this label. The label produces much more mainstream music and would be unlikely to be interested in something in-established such as my track /video.

+1 Records :
An independent record label founded in 2008 by Jonny Kaps. They're an american company with artists such as Ekkah signed to them, which would fit with the origin of my track, that produce alternative and independent
music and therefore would be more likely to be interested in my track.

However it is still unlikely to be in contact with record labels with such an in-established artist, therefore it is much more likely that the music will be self produced and put up on sites such as Soundcloud or Youtube and shared via social media. Although, unknown artists can still put their music up for sale on iTunes for a small fee, therefore giving audiences a chance to invest in the new music no matter how small the audience may be.

Editing Effect Ideas

The thermal effect use through out the video is an effect I would like to incorporate into my video as it fits well with the disco genre for using interesting visuals an contrasting colours. Although this video uses the effect for the entire duration of the track, I would only potentially use the effect for snip its of the video.

The fish-eye camera effect works well with this video and creates an interesting visual effect for the audience throughout. However, this video is shot in sow motion which wouldn't work for my disco themed video, thus I may use this effect on some off the shots but have them probably in fast motion to fit the genre of the song.

Finally the special effects use din this video to have the artists head against a coloured background will fit exceptionally well with the disco genre of my music track. This may be difficult to create on a small scale, however with the use of Aftereffects and a green screen is perfect;y possibly to use for some shots in my video, obviously differentiating my shots from that off this video.

Research into the Music Industry

The main television companies that air music videos are MTV, Channel UFX, 4Music, Viva and Kerrang! As the track is of the disco pop genre it is more likely to be aired on a pop music channel ,should the artists be more well know, like MTV, 4Music ect rather than Kerrang! who tend to air more rock based music, therefore wouldn't air a my video as it wouldn't appeal to the audience they are appealing to. However the likely hood of an independent video such as my own being aired on

Taylor Swifts latest video
on the vevo site.
Music Videos are much easier to consume in the modern age than they have been in the past due to the internet and websites such as Youtube and Vimeo meaning that traditional music TV channels are less popular for music and also air reality TV shows e.g Gerdie shore on MTV . The online youtube channel Vevo have a specific channels for well known artists and mark the artists videos with their company logo, Vevo are not genre specific like music TV tends to be and will air a variety of genres on their channel but only from established artists of a certain level. Therefore, it is unlikely I would be able to use vevo as a platform to share my music due to its low profile. It will be more likely to spread my music video on an independent youtube channel and share it through social media, until it reaches high enough profile to attract a wide audience online.

The purpose of a music video is to promote the artist and give an extra something to a track to interest audiences. A music video is usually anticipated by audience and is related after the initial  track. The 'visuals' of the video give audiences a narrative to assoiciate the track to and establish a sense of the artists creative direction.

Analysis of Jess Glynne's Webpage

Homepage:
The Homepage of the website matches the aesthetic of  her album with the pink background and a contrasting darker based image. The drop box at the top of the page links to 4 topics further down the home page, working the same way as the Fickle Friends webpage. There is also direct links to the artists social media pages to encourage audiences to interact with the artist, as per star theory. The first image shown of the webpage is of Jess Glynne, taken from the front of her digipak ensuring that audiences have a common image of her to associate the music with. The promotional details about her debut album and links on how to purchase and stream it are beneath the title. The typeface used is the same as the digipak, ensuring the audience have  a reoccurring font that they will associate with this artist.
Videos:
The link to the other related videos for the artist feature embeded videos from youtube, consisting of live performances and older tracks previously released. Pictures and videos relating to the artist are a common convention of disco/pop artists therefore will feature on the webpage I will create.

Sign up:
The opportunity for audiences to sign up to the Jess Glynne newsletter is also featured further down on the home page with a link in the drop box at the top. This gives audiences the change to become a part of the artists fandom and feel involved in a community that all like the same type of music. Bringing fans closer together to support the artist is in Jess Glynnes best interest for publicity online.

Live:
The option for viewing the artists tour dates is present on the website, however she has no tour dates currently, therefore this link is used to display the record company details for added publicity for other artists under Atlantic Records.

Store:
The store page is similar to many artists merchandise online stores with the images be
ing displayed in the centre of the page and the option to place the items into a shopping basket positioned below each item for consumer ease.

Group Feedback of track and potential ideas

The track was played to the media class in order to collect different ideas about what could be done in the music video. Typical disco conventions were noted with the main idea being that the video should feature bright costumes and dancing of some sort. Also, the group mentioned that the video should be focused around a male artist in order to fit with the voice of the track, this will help shape the type of narrative I will be establishing in the video.

Audience Questionnaire

Potential Target Market

Demographic:
In terms of a disco track, audiences are not defined by their gender as the track appeals to all people who wish to interact with it. Typically disco/house music is popular in the gay community, however the music and videos are never targeted at the LBGT community, the tracks become popular due to their upbeat nature encouraging audiences to dance. The age of the audience will be younger adults (18-24) as it is the type of track to be played in disco clubs, however older age group may be attracted to the song for its disco dancing pull, however it will be younger generations that will be represented in the video as younger people are more likely to invest in music. Ethnicities and nationalities will be represented in the music video in order to appeal to all, however music is globally available  and the track is produced in english which may discourage audiences in non english speaking countries.

Psychographic:
As the genre is disco, the type of lifestyle the audience will have is those with a disposable income to purchase music and those who are typical party goers and enjoy the disco dancing scene. In terms of interests and opinions audiences of disco music tend to be open minded which gives a large scope of ideas when creating the video, however they do expect typical conventions form a tracks video and would likely to be skeptical if something significant to disco such as bright colours were to be missing.

Behavioural:
In music,  audiences tend to be loyal to certain brands or artists over new or unheard of names, this is something to consider when creating the digipak to ensure that it is visually interesting enough to attract new audiences. Also, audiences that have the readiness to buy are necessary to attract in order to make sales on the product, rather than audience streaming the tracks online and not investing in the product themselves.

Kiesza Web Page analysis

 Homepage:
Initially audiences are met with the artists name and latest music release as soon as they enter the webpage. The typeface used for the artists name matches the title of the the latest track, creating a scene of unity on the web page, making it more visually appealing to the audience. Both the track title and the artists name are positioned in the centre of the page to ensure that they are the first images the audience see when they open the site. The artist name is slightly smaller in size so that audiences focus on the fact that there is new music as it is the assumption that fans know the name of the artist in order to access the site.  This specific typeface raises the idea of intertexulaity with the heavy metal band 'Metallica' so that audience immediately feel comfortable with the font as they have seen it somewhere recognisable before.
Scroll down:
Further down on the home page, a Youtube clip of the official video for the newest track, ensuring that audience can access the music quickly and efficiently in order to maintain interest with the site. Options for purchasing the music as well as streaming it are also linked to the websites home page again to redirect audiences into purchasing the music. Social media links are also displayed, at the very bottom of the page, so that audiences can connect and 'follow' their artists online and relate to them more (star theory). The positioning of the social media accounts is abnormal in comparison to other websites as the audience have to scroll to access the links and not be introduced to them as soon as they access the website.
New link:
The website homepage links to other Kiesza pages from her store and tour dates to recent news (six in total links to other pages). The news page shows the synergy between the artist and the make up brand MAC. This is great publicity for both the artist with the launch of the new album and the make up company. This page like the homepage is positioned in the centre to ensure the audience focus on the information, which is in a more legible font creating a noticeable contrast from the typeface of the homepage, capturing audiences attention.
Shop page:
The home page also has a link to the artists shop. It features many different examples of merchandise decorated with the artists name, logo and picture. Something for my website to feature would be a merchandise shop displays with three images across the page for consumer comfort.

Online Digipaks

With the growing popularity of streaming music, and streaming services offering monthly subscriptions, the popularity of purchasing CD's especially of less well known artists is declining. This has caused up and coming artists to upload their music to sites such as iTunes and Spotify rather than producing physical copies in order to lessen the cost of producing music. The two album covers are from new disco artists that have made their music only available online thus haven't produced any digipaks. However the front covers both symbolise the disco genre from the bright and contrasting colours of the fickle friends album, instantly grabbing audiences attention with the interesting and unexplained imagery. The bands name is situated in the top left corner larger than the name of the album 'glue' in the bottom right corner, however they both share the same typeface which is not always consistent with other digipak cover of this genre. The Ekkah album cover is simply just one image of the bands name in balloons. The silver/monochromatic appearance does cause audiences to associate the image with vintage disco/pop music due to the streamers and colour grading of the image to make it appear older.
